I have a little hunch about something. You probably have photos tucked into drawers, living on old flash drives, or quietly hanging out on your phone. I’m talking about birthdays, vacations, and all those beautifully ordinary moments that somehow mean everything.


And honestly? I love that you keep them!


But some photos are meant for more than a digital life. A few favorites deserve to live where you see them every day on your walls, in your spaces, woven right into the rhythm of your home. Because printed portraits aren’t just decorations, they're little anchors to the people and moments you love most.

One of the biggest reasons people pause at this step is simple: choosing a frame can feel weirdly overwhelming. So let’s make it easy (and maybe even a little fun).

Here are a few of my favorite tips to help you choose a frame that truly does your portrait justice.


1. Let the portrait lead

Before you even glance at frame styles, spend a moment with the image itself.

What’s the feeling? The color? The energy?

  • If your portrait is vibrant and colorful, a softer or neutral frame lets all that joy shine without competition.
  • If there’s one standout color, echoing it in the frame or mat can create a beautifully intentional, designer-level look.
  • If it’s black and white, you have freedom — classic black or white feels timeless, while natural wood or a gentle tone can add warmth and depth.

I like to think of the frame as the final brushstroke. It is there to complete the artwork, but never steals the story.


2. Think about the home it’s joining

Your portrait isn’t floating in space,  it’s becoming part of your home’s story.

So I always encourage clients to consider:

  • What colors and textures live in this room?
  • Does the space feel modern, cozy, rustic, airy, collected?
  • Do you want the portrait to blend softly or be a statement piece?

The goal isn’t “perfect matching.” It’s to create belonging. When a frame fits both the portrait and the space, the whole piece feels effortless, like it was always meant to live there.


3. Choose quality that protects the story

Frames aren’t only about style, they’re also about care. A well-made frame and acid free mat helps protect your printed portrait from light, dust, moisture, and the slow wear of time. And when an image holds people you love, that protection matters. Because these aren’t just photos. They’re pieces of your family’s visual history. And that’s really the heart of why I believe so strongly in printed artwork: technology changes, but the portraits we hang in our homes become part of our everyday lives.
